The joy of travelling with a film camera or five reasons to travel with analogue camera

After a few trips both within the UK and abroad I realised that it is great to travel with a film camera. Film photography will help you to keep amazing memories of your adventures and have a good time.

First of all, if you are travelling by plane, put your camera in cabbing luggage. You will have a peace of mind if you bring a camera with you on board and you are less likely to have broken lenses or other parts of the camera. Don’t be afraid to put the film in a cabin luggage.

One of the most common myths is that going through airport X-ray systems will damage photo film. You don’t have to worry as most modern x-ray machines are safe for all types of films. There is no definite answer to what is the best camera to travel with. Make sure that you are comfortable with your camera travelling to a different city or country.

These are five reasons for taking film camera on your next holiday:

Enjoy more

Unless you are very picky film photographer who takes its time to set up a camera for a perfect shot, film camera will allow you to spend more time in a moment and less taking photos of everything you see. Modern technology created lots of opportunities, thanks to digital cameras and phones everyone is taking loads of photographs when on holiday. While taking photographs with digital devices, some of us prefer to share them straightaway. Mobile data is becoming cheaper abroad or almost free that is taking that precious time from a moment when you are supposed to enjoy the holiday. Obviously, it wouldn’t apply to everyone. If you know someone who is like that, gift them a film camera. Instant or disposal film cameras would be a good start too. Getting someone into the world of film photography is always a good excuse.

Treasure every photo

Knowing that you have a few shots will enable you to take photos of what matters. It’s kind of related to the previous point of enjoying more time being in a moment. Take a few rolls depending on how long you are going to be away but remember that you have limited number of photographs.

Shooting film in different environments

For most of us travelling is the way to get out of daily routine. The new environment is crucial especially for those photographers who love taking pictures of landscapes or urban scenes. Film photography is exciting but taking pictures when travelling to the place for the first time adds more thrill to the adventure.

Meet new people

Caring a film camera around will attract a few people who enjoy film photography. I’ve been approached by film photographers in different cities because I had a film camera with me. The unexpected encounters led to a few short conversations about film photography. If you are staying in a different city for a while, you can even find a meet up of local photographers. That’s a good way to meet new people who share your interests.

Sharing adventures

Nearly everyone who travels these days would share lots of photos taken with a smartphone or digital camera. Sharing film photos is a part of the excitement of being a film photographer. Film provides better quality than most smartphones and helps you to get feedback from other photographers.

Let the film camera become your travel companion. Enjoy your next adventure and always have a few spare rolls of film.
